"They had quite given up hope of a son or daughter when, to their shock and surprise, Euphemia found that she was pregnant and their beloved boy, James, was born."
James was born an only child of wealthy, pureblood parents, and as a result had an upbringing that made him something of a brat. As a young boy he was spoiled, pampered, and took those traits into his first years at Hogwarts. Despite these less than savoury aspects of his personality, however, James was charming and popular, much to the disgust of certain parties who would have much rather seen him expelled. He was proud, confident, and fond of pranks to the point of being a bully, hexing other students simply because he could.
No one saw more of his ire than one Severus Snape, with whom he had got off on the wrong foot from day one. Snape’s friendship with Lily Evans, a fellow Gryffindor that he had an unrequited crush on, was only one driving force behind his dislike of the Slytherin student. It wasn’t difficult to dislike Severus, and very few people would step in to save him from the taunts and hexes that James would bestow upon him with unrelenting regularity.
Possessed of a level of egotism bordering on arrogance, the young James didn’t hesitate to show off and was well aware of his talents both as a chaser and an intelligent, gifted student. Criticism could be dealt, and was, but there was little of it that would ever actually stick.
While he may have been obnoxious and boastful, James was always - deep down - still a good person. His friends would have his deep and unending loyalty, and he would go to great lengths to ensure that they were safe and happy. On discovering that his friends Remus was a werewolf, James (along with the other Marauders) spent years secretly learning to become an animagus so that Remus didn’t have to face his transformations alone. It is said that James would have regarded it as the height of dishonour to mistrust his friends, and that is perhaps something that would later be his downfall.
As he grew up, James shook off the more unpleasant aspects of his personality - the arrogance and boastful pride tempered, and he even managed to finally impress Lily Evans, gaining the return of the affection he had held for her for years. However, he never lost his sense of adventure and willingness to throw himself headlong into danger.
James epitomises what it is to be a Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart, and though his bullheadedness often got him into trouble during his school years, there were always lines that he wouldn’t cross. A fine example of this would be his lack of any hesitance in rescuing Snape from the transformed Remus, after Sirius told the Slytherin boy how to get into the passage under the Whomping Willow. Even with his intense dislike of the other student, he still wouldn’t stoop to allowing him to get injured (or worse) in such a situation.
By his final year, James had matured into a responsible young man, even attaining the title of Head Boy. It was in the same year that he began dating Lily, and making plans to propose to her after graduation. James would go on to join the Order of the Phoenix, and defy Lord Voldemort three times over the following three years.
